The Lehigh Valley Storytelling Guild promotes and explores the art of storytelling, from the ancient traditional story to the modern personal story. We expand the role of storytelling from entertainment to education, and toward healing and enriching our community. We believe in the power of story.
What is Storytelling?
Storytelling is the interactive art of words and actions creating the images of a story that engages the listener’s imagination. Storytelling involves a two-way interaction between a storyteller and the listener. The interactive nature of storytelling accounts for its immediacy and impact.
In most traditional theatre or in dramatic film, the listener enjoys the illusion that they are witnessing the characters and events of the story. In traditional storytelling, the story happens in the mind of the listener. The listener becomes, therefore, a co-creator of the story.
Storytelling happens in many situations, from kitchen-table conversation to religious ritual, from telling tales while washing dishes to performing for thousands of paying listeners. There are many cultures on earth, each with rich traditions, customs, and opportunities for storytelling. All are equal citizens in the diverse world of storytelling.
(The above is drawn from National Storytelling Network’s more extensive definition.)
Who we are:
Our members are professional and amateur storytellers, poets, actors, and others who benefit by the study of the art of storytelling and whose pleasure it is to practice this ancient art. Both experienced storytellers and newcomers are welcomed.
The Guild was started in 1998 to promote the art of storytelling in the Lehigh Valley, and to refine the member’s storytelling skills. We have presented numerous showcases, appeared at festivals, conducted story circles and workshops. We meet at Godfrey Daniels Listening Club on the second Wednesday of each month except August (See you at Musikfest).
